Boys Bedroom Lamp

While we love any creative home renovation project, there's nothing better than seeing a makeover with a good cause behind it. That's why this particular makeover has officially won over our hearts: The Corner Kingdom Project, an organization that designs rooms for kids with special needs or illnesses, recently raised enough money to surprise John Marandola, a 5-year-old with aggressive brain cancer, with the firefighter bedroom of his dreams.
John was diagnosed with Stage 4 anapestic ganglioglioma in 2013. And while he was given just three to nine months to live last year, this brave little boy has proven himself a fighter. "He fights fires AND cancer," writes the Corner Kingdom Project on its website.
As anyone with kids knows, it's important that your children have a bedroom that makes them comfortable and reflects their interests. When John told his parents he wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up, it was the first time they heard him talk about something he wanted to be. As his mother discusses the experience in a video about the bedroom makeover, she starts to cry. But thanks to this amazing organization, John is already living his dream.
Here's what his bedroom looked like before the makeover:

Clearly, the space—which was formerly the family's living room—was cluttered and generic. It looked like any child's play room. But then, after a successful round of fundraising, the Corner Kingdom Project stepped in with the help of Evesham Fire Rescue and BELFOR Restoration. More than 50 volunteers came out to help makeover the space over just one weekend.

Judging by John's reaction, we'd say this makeover was successful in helping this strong little boy get the dream bedroom he deserves. His new bed is even shaped like a firetruck with a bunk for his sister to stay on. The slide attached to the side is the stuff every little kid imagines having. And when John needs support, all he has to do is look around him—over 200 fire departments donated their patches, which were used to decorate the area around his bed and quilt. Meanwhile, John's closet was designed to resemble the fire station's garage doors.
